100% of this site (so far) is generated by Blosxom (it's pronounced "Blossom").
I looked at Movable Type, Drupal, and a few other popular blogging tools.
As soon as I found Blosxom, I knew that my search was over. Blosxom is
pure geeky goodness. The whole thing is one tiny Perl script. That's it.
You can roll your own plugins (using Perl, of course) and change or extend Blosxom's
behaviour *very* easily. Many people have written useful plugins and contributed them
to the community.
My original plan was to combine some blogging tools with PHP and MySQL so
I could do all sorts of cool stuff with my site. Blosxom is addictive.
I haven't needed or wanted to write any PHP yet.
I was feeling a little down on Blosxom
after a few months but then I set up some concert listing pages and rediscovered it's beauty.
The Amazon wish list stuff (both the recent items on the sidebar and the full wishlist)
are generated by a little Perl script called "wishy" that I cobbled together. It
checks my Amazon wish list hourly (cron) and generates two files containing HTML fragments.
I use the Blosxom file plugin to include these HTML bits in my pages.
Update November 2005 : Blosxom has been abandoned by it's maintainer. A group of fans are
working on revitalizing the project but I'm not sure if I would recommend it to anyone setting up a new blog.
I guess Wordpress is king right now but it's just so... blah.
